Who can participate?
ANYONE interested in creating/receiving Nirvana in Fire 1 &/or 2 based fanwork is welcome to participate! Our goal is simply to have fun creating and exchanging NIF fanworks! If that’s something that appeals to you, come play!
Be aware that spoilers will abound, so if you haven’t finished the series, proceed at your own risk.

For anyone who is interested but has limited time/bandwidth and might not be able to commit to the exchange, you can still participate in the fun!

+ HELP OUT as pinch-hitter, a beta-reader and/or a c-picker (just like Britpickers but for Chinese elements). SIGN UP HERE

+ CREATE TREATS!
Once the prompt list is revealed for public viewing, anyone, signed-up or not, can create something(no minimum!) based on any of the prompts that inspire them and post them under our NIFTREATS2020 collection. More cake is more cake!

What kind of works are welcome?
This exchange welcomes ANY AND ALL CREATIVE MEDIUMS. Any fan, no matter their skillset, is welcome to participate.
Ideas of mediums include but are not limited to:
Fanfic, Poetry, Fan Translations, Podfic, Fanart, Crafts (embroidery, modelling, cosplay, dolls, jewelry, etc), Manips, Fanvids, Filk, Gifsets, Fan Music, Games, etc.

What’s the minimum requirement?
Because ANY medium is welcome, it’s hard to put a clear measure on this. We will therefore operate on the honor system and trust you to use your judgement.
Your general guideline is to create a completed original transformative fanwork for your giftee, of a quality that you would be happy to receive yourself.
As a general guideline:

+500 words minimum for fic
+5 minutes minimum for podfic
In order to increase accessibility, we also ask that any images-based works please include an alt-text, or written description for screen-readers.

If you have questions/concerns, please contact us at nifexchange@gmail.com.

 THE 2019 NIF EXCHANGE AWARDS!
Help us spread the word!

WHEN?

UNTIL JANUARY 25th, 2020. Winners will be announced on February 5th, 2020.

WHO CAN PLAY?

Everyone and anyone at all. You do NOT have to have participated in the NIF exchange to nominate or vote for your favorite works. Creators, betas, treaters, pinch-hitters, cheerleaders, readers, lurkers, absolutely everyone is welcome to play!
We do however ask you to comment while signed into AO3. In the event you do not have an AO3 account, you can comment as a guest but please sign each comment with the same username/email, so that we may keep track of your participation and contact you if necessary.

HOW DOES IT WORKS?

All works, including treats, from the 2019 NIF exchange collection are eligible to be nominated for various award categories. (With the exception of any works tagged “NIFEX AWARDS OPT-OUT”.)

Nominate your favorite works for an appropriate set award category, or make up your own free category. Other participants can agree with your nomination by adding votes for that work in said category. For each category, votes will be tallied at the end to see which work had collected the most, and be declared the winner of that category.
There are no limits on how many categories a single work can be nominated for. Simply put, go nuts.

To nominate a work for a category, simply comment on a work.

To help mods out, please include at the beginning of your comment this phrase:
“I nominate this work for (name of category) in the 2019 NIF exchange awards.”

Once a work has been nominated, if you agree with this nomination, you can add your vote to that work in the specified category. To vote, comment on the work and include this phrase:
“I vote for this work in the (name of category) for the 2019 NIF exchange awards.”

Obviously, you are HIGHLY encouraged to elaborate in detail, in your comment, on why you have nominated or voted for the work for that category.

OOOOH, WHAT DO WE WIN?

Claiming is open from SEPTEMBER 25th to SEPTEMBER 27th 2019. It closes when it is no longer the 27th anywhere in the world.

The Prompt list is here! - please check it again before claiming!

FILL IN THE CLAIM FORM HERE

+ Please provide 3 choices of PROMPT SETS (not individual prompts) by number. A prompt set = 1 participant.

+ Claiming early will increase your chances of getting your first preferences but doesn’t completely guarantee it.

+ We ask you to be mindful of the prompts, the ratings, likes and dislikes and the medium while claiming the prompt sets. Please select something you feel will inspire you and can deliver on. We want it to be a great experience for both you and your giftee!

+ Mods will try their best to keep track of claims as much as we can in real time. We will Strikethrough  prompt sets that have been claimed 3 times or more. If you see that one of your preferred prompt set is struckthrough, please choose a different set. (This update will NOT be done in real time, as we have work and life to deal with too. We will try to do it at least once-twice daily tho.)

+ In rare cases where all your 3 prompts have been previously claimed, the Mods will reach out to you via mail to notify you to select something else. Please keep an eye out for Modmail or messages.

FINAL ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE SENT OUT ON OCTOBER 1st.

Thank you for playing with us!

Didn't sign up, but would still like to participate? Here's how!

SIGN UP AS A PINCH-HITTER

Pinch-hitters are creators who step in in case a participant defaults and fulfills their recipient's gift in their stead. They may be called upon in short notice to create something. We are ALWAYS in need of invaluable pinch-hitters, for all mediums (fic, art, etc).

HOW IT WORKS: When a participant defaults, the prompt they were assigned gets orphaned. Mods will send out the orphaned prompt to all pinch-hitters to look at. Pinch-hitters may choose to "claim" it and create for it or not, depending on how compatible they feel the assignment is. If more than one pinch-hitter wants the prompt, it will be assigned to the one who "claimed" it first. Pinch-hitters will always be able to choose to accept an assignment or not.

SIGN UP AS A BETA

We all need a second pair of eyes sometimes. Betas are invaluable in offering feedback and support. We need betas for any mediums.

HOW IT WORKS: Participants who want a beta can get in touch with mods via email, with a short description of what their work is like and what kind of beta help they are looking for. We will do our best to match you with a compatible beta. We will contact both parties to suggest a match. Obviously, betas can also choose to accept or refuse this match. If it's accepted, mods put both parties n touch with each other.

CREATE A TREAT

Anyone at all can create a treat based on any of the prompts from the prompt list (or previous years' prompt lists). Treats can be posted starting the same time as regular gifts (December 15th), and they may continue posting at any time during the year. More info on the treats collection upcoming.

Don't be shy! We don't bite! :)

Thank you all so much for participating in the 2019 NIF exchange!

All your prompts have been copied into this PROMPT LIST!

Each prompt set contains the 3 prompts given by a single participants.

Please take some time to read through it and do the following:

+ Check that your own prompt set contains no mistakes. If we have made any mistakes, please email mods asap!

+ Pick out AT LEAST 3 PROMPT SETS YOU WANT TO CREATE FOR!

Keep in mind that you don't need to love all the prompts in a set in order to want to claim it. Similarly, if you love 2 or more prompts from the same set, you still only need to claim the set once.

FAQ & GUIDELINES

FAQ

1. Who can participate?

ANYONE interested in creating/receiving Nirvana in Fire 1 &/or 2 based fanwork is welcome to participate. Be aware that spoilers will abound, so if you haven’t finished the series, proceed at your own risk.

2. How does the Exchange and Claiming Process work?

This year, we will be using the CLAIMING format of gift assignment again.

This means that during sign up, you will define 3 prompts for the gift you would like to receive. Everyone’s prompts will be compiled into a list of anonymous prompt sets (each participant's prompts are one set) and released for viewing.
When claiming starts, you will choose 3 prompt sets that you would like to create for, in order of preference.
Mods look at everyone’s claims and then assign you your final assignment.

This is not an absolute guarantee you will get the perfect assignment, because our job is also to ensure that every participant receives a gift. We will be striking out prompt sets that are claimed more than 3 times as claims come in, so the pool of available prompts will shrink as claiming progresses. Shuffling MIGHT occur depending on how claims pan out. But please be assured we will do our utmost to ensure everyone‘s preferences are fairly considered and that everyone gets an assignment they feel good about.

3. What kind of fanworks are permitted?

This exchange welcomes ANY AND ALL CREATIVE MEDIUMS. We only ask that your gift be a completed original transformative work created for your giftee. Participants can be as creative as they like. Any fan, no matter their skillset, is welcome to participate. Ideas of mediums include but are not limited to:

Fanfic, Poetry, Fan Translations, Podfic, Fanart, Crafts (embroidery, modelling, cosplay, dolls, jewelry, etc), Manips, Fanvids, Gifsets, Fan Music, Games, etc.

4. I’m inspired! Can I include more than one medium in my gift and make it multi-media?

Abso-freaking-lutely!!! The only limit is your imagination. And the time… and your recipient’s preferences…

5. What’s the minimum requirement for my gift?

We are trusting all of you creators to use your judgement in this. As a general guideline:

-1000 words minimum for fic

- 10 minutes minimum for podfic

A lot of other mediums are hard to put a clear measure on. Your general guideline is to produce a completed, standalone work of a quality that you would be happy to receive yourself. If you have doubts/questions/concerns, please talk to us.

6. How will posting work?

All works will be posted to the Archive of Our Own and submitted to our NIF Exchange collection. If you do not have an AO3 account, we strongly encourage you to create one. That said, you may also  submit your work to us by email and we will post it under a mod account.

Non-text mediums should be embedded or linked in an AO3 post as well (refer to this AO3 ressource).  Don’t hesitate to reach out if you run into any trouble and we’ll help you find a solution.

FURTHER SUBMISSION INFO (SUCH AS THE AO3 COLLECTION) TBA.

7. What about NIF2?

Nirvana in Fire 2  is considered a part of the larger NIF Fandom, and thus is also included in this exchange. We encourage everyone to try and include a mix of prompts from both series if possible. If you haven’t seen it, don’t worry!

GUIDELINES

1. Please be respectful. We are all here to have a good time and no one wants to feel attacked (except by feels).

2. This is a gift exchange, which means you must produce a gift for someone else. Please consider your schedule, and whether or not you reasonably will be able to finish creating a gift in the given time frame, before signing up.

3. Please be sure to comment on the gift you receive. Your santa worked hard on it and it is only polite to acknowledge their efforts, just as we are sure you’d like your efforts to be acknowledged.

4. Please communicate with us and don’t feel guilty about defaulting -- do it earlier rather than later!  We understand that life happens. If at any point you feel overwhelmed or unsure about delivering the gift by deadline, PLEASE TALK TO US. We would prefer it if you talked to us early and requested an extension or defaulted rather than stress out and not be able to deliver on deadline. Let’s give our pinch-hitters a chance to work their magic. This is for fun. If it’s causing you stress/guilt/bad feels, something’s not right and we want to help sort it out.

5. If you have any questions for your recipient, please email us at nifexchange@gmail.com and we will forward them for you. Please do not contact them yourself as it will spoil the surprise.

6. Most importantly, HAVE FUN!!!! This is the loveliest community and we want to keep the love happening! :D
